OIl will never run out in mine or yours or your grandchildren life time there is enough untapped for the world has 2.1 trillion barrels of untapped oil, or 70 times the current global annual production rate, If it is 70 years then our grandchildren born today will see it. In reality if it is 70yrs then the impact will start to occur in 50years because we will never truly run out of oil. It will just become incredibly uneconomical for anything except essential things. Even electric motors have grease in them. No one can agree on how long the oil will last. Because of course no one knows how much untapped or undiscovered oil there actually is. But best guesses are 50 - 150 yrs but it could be 1000yrs. What we do know is it's a finite resource and the one thing everyone can agree on is it will run out long before 'never' by which time there will be alternatives.

Lithium not a finite resource?

Lithium not a finite resource? Totally finite. All resources are right? The difference is that Lithium doesn't get converted to atmosphere gas as it is used. Just like Lead Acid batteries, Li can be recycled. Lead is also a finite resource. New battery tech is Sodium Ion. BYD just announced a car that will do 500km on Sodium-ion batteries. There's like a gazillion times more salt than Li in the Earth’s crust.

lots of carbon footprint produced to make EVs,I believe more than a ice vehicle but less in EV running cost,EV higher tyre wear etc no win situation
Yes we got do something different but lets not rush in until we are certain we are on the right track.Meanwhile nasa carries on with more satelites and space explorities. Rusia/Ukraine continue dropping shells which will be having an effect on immediate area.

There is no mandate to produce EVs.
The mandate is to reduce emissions. If the auto manufacturers want to stay in business then they need to innovate to reduce those emissions. Right now the two options available to them are electric and hydrogen. So they are all in figuring out how to do that.
It's not like anyone has come up with a 3rd emission free option worth exploring...
The carbon footprint issue only holds if the vehicle is charged from non renewable sources. Eg, owning an electric car on Stewart Island and charging from the grid achieves nothing.
Yes weight is an ongoing issue that doesn't look like it's going to go away.
Not sure what your NASA point is? But you know space rockets are fueled by liquid hydrogen right?

I've posted this before. In the 1840's the Aldermen of London were grappling with a similar problem. According to Planners London would be buried under a 100 foot of horse dung within one hundred years. Well, that went away by itself. Springs to mind NZ is facing a similar problem today but from only one horse (face)

The horse manure crisis of 1894?
The more horses they bought in to take away the manure, the more manure they got.
An analogy for insurmountable problems being rendered moot by the introduction of new technologies...
It didn't go away by itself. The authorities said no more horses to take away manure and started using the automobile.
Of course the cost of housing and feeding your horse went up and up and it became cheaper to own a car than a horse and so the manure was replaced by cars.
Same thing is happening with cars. The government is making emission generating cars more and more expensive so people are figuring out how to make cars that generate less emissions for less...

At the Gull in Kaiwaka a week or so back there was a que for the battery charger. One family had set up camp and were playing cars while Dad popped the billy onto a portable gas stove. The dude filling his truck with fuel went off at him for having a naked flame in a gas station. Mr lectric looked completely lost as to what the problem was while his wife screamed abuse about the truck drivers weight.
It appears someone took the 'Buy this EV and get a free Lobotomy' special.

Like many EV owners they were also a little bit special but then it's in a bearable place for a picnic if ya do have too stop there.

I'm fast coming to the conclusion EV car manufacturers are lazy fuckers designing cars for equally lazy fuckers who don't go past the bowling club, don't mind driving at 60kph in a 100kph zone followed by 2km of traffic or just have little ambition, all the while creating more mess than they will ever fix.
Hondas new EV bike has been released and yet again another manufacturer has gone with swappable batteries, didn't say but I'm assuming they are hot swappable like the others. Buy a EV motorsickle and you can get real bike performance plus they come with real range. But there is still the charging issues, that's the biggie.

Speaking of EV's, was talking to a tradie type the other day. Does window furnsishings. Is trading in his late model diesel ford van for a VW PHEV van. Doesn't give a fuck about the climate of fuel consumption. At 20,000km / yr, he's worked out he can save $40k on road user charges over the life of the van.

Slightly off topic but I visited a bike shop yesterday for a brake bleed kit. First time I've been in a while. One thing that stood out was that bikes that relied on just pedals for propulsion seemed to be far outnumbered by bikes with batteries. The salesman said they were selling more e bikes than bike bikes. One thing that confused me was the little e mountainbikes designed for kids. What a world we live in.
