Jeremy Clarkson takes on the West Oxfordshire Council and wins, a victory for farmers and common sense D2 hooked us up with Amazon so we could watch Clarksons Farm as I'd had so many comparing my venture into rural as the same as JC's. The parallels they draw are scary right down to when JC decided to get all Eco by building some wet lands, just like I also did. JC then went onto trash the fuck out of the place with an excavator, just like I also did..opps. I did consider a drone that barks to move the stock only to see JC actually did it. There is so much its is genuinely WTF?
Anyway if you watch the series, 2 I think it is, the whole council thing plays out in it. The councils decision to say No did appear to have a very large element of 'JC trying to push his celebratory on us, fuck him'. So they said No but then one of JC's team said take it to the Ombudsmen or whatever it is called over there. They did and the whomever came back saying the council had been overly zealous which over turned the council.
While JC went in somewhat ignorantly which didn't help, the council weren't that crash hot either. In the end common sense was the winner.

So what you are saying is, all that has to happen now is you will get shafted by the Council and then you get to spend moonbeams going to the Ombudsman or Privy Council or something to sort it out? PS I can't believe you mentioned Jeremy Clarkson and common sense in the same sentence...

JC and common sense? He's in a TV show where he gets paid very highly to play the lad and have fun, he does it very well. But off screen is he the same? I'd argue yes and no. No mainly because watch season 3 and you'll find out. He's going down the exact same path as us, and many others in NZ and world wide, for very sensible reasons. He knows the traditional way of farming has some WTF built in that may not be obvious to long term farmers but can be very much so to newer entrants that have not been taught traditional.
JC's TV shows are designed to be entertainment and not all entertainment is actually true or a true representation.
If you dive in behind Clarksons farm you will see it is being credited by the UK Government for increasing interest in UK rural produce both locally and offshore. An increase in younger people looking at working in rural. Farm shops UK wide are saying the show has brought their business more interest. NZ needs a Clarkson to do the same here.
What's more season 3 is all about JC taking his farm into regenerative farming. ALL the UK happy clappies, their Chloes, are playing furiously with themselves as they try to hate JC with a passion but also love the dude for what is going to be a massive publicity boost for tidier more environmentally sound farming. If it plays out like some suggest JC will be the best thing to happen to UK farming in decades. The dude from Groove Amarda is helping him, he is a regen fan and apparently pretty good at it.
It certainly is all tinged with 'weird shit that happens' but if it's good shit more power to him.
As it pans out JC is pretty much in the same place we are and we're both heading towards the same end game.

Clarkson is getting into regenerative farming?!? Now I've heard it all. That is like a politician telling the truth or a bureaucrat suggesting a pay cut for themselves. Might have to actually watch his show and suss all this strange phenomina. What platform is it on?

Might have to actually watch his show and suss all this strange phenomina. What platform is it on? A LOT want to get into ReGen but most are to financially pushed to be able to even try just in case it's a fuck up. Every one of my rural neighbours are in that boat. Yesterday Mr Affco came down to offer some of my Angus ladies ride to Moerewa for some 'body work' before a cruise to far of lands, apparently I have grown some spectacular briskets. He also wants to suss ReGen but is finding pushing the button on that a little to scary again in case it's a fuck up. That is a very common sentiment both in NZ and worldwide inc the UK.
But as we do not rely on our rural for income we are going down the ReGen track for our neighbours, who are watching very closely, inputting info and will supply me some gear to do it. That way they can see and learn but without the stress of turning off parts of their farm and hoping it works. We more than happy to be the experiment for them.
JC will be doing the same thing but to a far larger audience and with help of some genuinely ReGen knowledgable people. At the same time all the Chloes and other townies who think the dairy industry is the milk fridge in the new World Metro may learn some fucking realities of life outside their fossil fuelled concrete reliant existence. JC is arguably going to have more input onto growing ReGen, the knowledge of it, why and the realities about it than anyone else on the planet currently has.
Talk about one extreme to the other though, one day V8's, the next compost. Just another WTF? in this rich tapestry we call life.
It's on Prime. Seasons 1 and 2 are up, 3 is close.

In a past life I did a couple of season in a meat works in rural Taranaki, then got transfered down to Wellington to run a suasage factory (very good sausages if I can say so myself, won sausage of the year in 2001). Went flatting with an old mate and some others in Welly. Being a young single male, I worked out very very quickly that the Chloes in Welly thought that cows were cute and lived in paddocks, and yummy steak came from the chiller in the supermarket, there was zero connection between the two, and they most definitely DID NOT want to hear any stories from yours truely as to where their food actually comes from. Infact, the aversion of Chloes to where meat really comes from led me to develop a fairly good lentil burger recipe for the sole purpose of getting in with one, or perhaps two of the aforementioned Chloes. When throwing a flat party / BBQ, everyone would expect hectares of red meat (which there was, or course) but the old vegetarian burger was a suitable crazy Ivan on my part to greatly assist my young single male objectives of the time. Ah, those were the days. My boss was mates with the guy that ran the chicken factory down the road. His vacuum packer would blow up on a regular frequency, and we had a spare one / one we only really needed for the Christmas rush, so we'd loan it to him. When he'd return it he'd drop off a suitable number of boxes of chicken breast in the loading dock. So I'd take 20kg or 40kg home to the flat. Chicken surprise for dinner for a month, but the flatmates never complained. Biggest argument I'd ever seen in the flat, I got 25kg of export grade ribeye for the flat. Two of the flatties ate all of it, I got one steak, and the other flattie didn't get an, even though it was paid for via the flat account. The flattie that didn't get any was very dark. Turns out the other two were having steak sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner... I think 25kg of steak didn't even last the weekend.

Rural mindsets are interesting and it’s often the blow-ins that instigate change , maybe because they have less face to lose . Also I think many townies moving out are used to adapting in business to survive or stay ahead of the competition so lateral thinking is 2nd nature . Thats not to say the rural industry isn’t innovative but most of the innovation is in equipment and non fertile grasses/crops that grow like stink for one season then die . Theres some very expensive Herbal ley seed mix at work waiting for the right time to give re-gen a go . Stock numbers have been halved so this spring will most likely be the time to make a start . Luckily the farm has never been a high intensity unit but it has been farmed since the first Scot’s arrived here . Some of the grasses that pop up in spring are old classics . An old local from a settler family told me they are remnants of the “burn mix” they used after clearing and burning bush which led me to this and other reading .

An old local from a settler family told me they are remnants of the “burn mix” they used after clearing and burning bush which led me to this and other reading . Concur for sure. Older farmed his entire life neighbour told me only last week he loved the yards I built as they are so versatile in the manner many of the fences are actually gates so I can have 2 big yards down thru to 10 or so real small ones depending on how I swing things. He said he's never considered that and only done what everyone else does sort of a thing. Where there is fuck all I see I know (arrogantly and often totally wrongly) I can make better
I know enough to know where I can do my own thing and when to seek wiser heads. But I am a demon on researching options and ideas so most I'm doing is only variations on a theme.
I've been on broadcast spreaders this month and finally got one that'll do powered lime/fert. Most struggle or just don't due to it's density and clumping so you need a SAM or contractor but as we're small block a SAM is OTT and contractors are just not interested, same must apply to the life sentence blockers as well. So either I do it or we don't so I am. As I want all natural and we have a mob close, Avoca, that do natural all based on powered lime I've got a dropper spreader which works great (a big auger inside so powdered is no worries) but I want to broadcast to cut down tracks in the paddocks when the salad mix goes in. So after along hunt I stumbled onto a polish made 3point one that has a vibrating screen in it and the whole floor shakes, not to dissimilar to a SAM. The mob selling them said they had little interest so I pointed out they need to push the 'powder capable' angle. It arrived today and I'm picking up 5t of lime/fert tomorrow so saturday we'll find out how it goes. Neighbour is very interested but didn't want to 'take a punt' with 5Kso again I'm the guinea pig.
If I can help them I'm all in, why not. Not to mention the brownie points I'm stacking up, which I reminding them of, for when I need their assistance or gear.
I'm chatting to Jethro at WestCo about the seed mix. He's been involved with a couple of ReGen experiments around Dargie. WestWind, the farm I'm sort of modling off has just decided to go full ReGen after 8 years of trials. They expect to get the paddocks rocking them only put a tractor in them maybe once a year for a little low strength fert. They are planing on resurfacing/refreshing the paddocks every 9-10years. They are quite a good sized Dairy, milking 500 from memory.
It is fun coming in, seeing an issue, sussing how it's sorted now and then sussing better ways. Some it's not worth it but a few it sure is.

I was going to ask what they are going to eat if they rip up 400,000 ha of productive land, then, I've concluded this is fantastic. Protein prices will go through the roof, our poor downtrodden sheep and beef farmers in NZ can finally actually break even, and NZ can return to the old ways of shipping tonnes of lamb to the old country. Either that or the EU will become beholden to China for protein. All we have to do is make damn sure it doesn't happen here. Even if the EU whack on massive trade tariffs, it should still cause global protein prices to rise, which can only be a good thing for NZ economically.

While I'm sure there is an angle of 'We'd like more business' about it the article is very interesting with the current push by rural to stop being fucked over by the banks. But reading this is it really just the banks or even of the banks doing, possibly not........ he says while thinking 'WTF, I'm potentially defending the banking industry, the world has gone full fruitloop'
As a FYI, I (with my bondage hat on) can ring my banking person and get 50K dropped into my account inside an hour no paperwork or any of that crap. But try to get 25K for rural, zero debt of any sort and recently valued at over 7 figures and after we have poured 150K odd into tidying, redeveloping and buying stock ourselves, all we get is a fast and hard No. Even a bank who claims to be the rural go to and has had a decent sized sum invested with it for many years wasn't interested. But was interested enough to ring and ask why we pulled the investment out, I doubt they liked the response.
Reading the below explains much.
