Sounds like a battle has been one by the farmers for now but the war against the EU continues of note is the report near the end that Spanish rice farmers may not be able to continue production because the EU rules have banned the use of a certain pesticide, but on the other hand rice imports are permitted from countries that continue to use this pesticide. I understand NZ pork farmers have been down this road, with many put out of business due to increasingly stringent regulations, yet imports are allowed from other countries eg Canada, where farmers do not have to meet the same level of regulation. Yep hendos bacon use Spanish pork and a relative of mine in hospo used to use pork from Czech Republic because it’s “cheap” . That's interesting re Hendo's, we buy it because it is Nitrate free, checking the fine print of the label it says "Made In NZ with pork from throughout Europe (Denmark, Finland, Poland, Spain, Germany)or NZ. Country of origin may vary depending on availability"That sure is a broad range of supply sources!

Our reasoning is you wouldn’t eat a sewer rat unless you were desperate so why pay $20 or more a week for something that has been raised in a pretty horrible environment. But it is very good bacon ! we have pigs but a bit busy to breed them anymore so just have a couple of pet sows

Its good to see but I'm confused why there is so little resistance from the authorities. Could be linked to the upcoming EU elections mid this year. Pay the protestors lip service, don't rev them up too much and hope they will go away??

The farmers up north were driving down to block Auckland motorways. Been trying for 4 weeks now but still stuck in Stop/Goes while being encircled by road cones. They hope break out and make it home before they become grandparents, but many aren't that optimistic.

For a while now i've been of the opinion that local government in NZ is (nearly?) worse than the labour crowd were ... 𝗪𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗯 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 Just when you thought the coalition government had put the kibosh into the Significant Natural Areas (SNA) land grab, things are about to get worse. The Waitaki District Council are taking destruction of private property rights to a completely new level. In their draft district plan, a whopping half a million hectares or nearly 70% of the Waitaki District land area is now captured under various regulatory classifications. This includes 300 SNAs and several landscape and cultural property overlays. Many property owners have multiple classifications and some have 100% of their property captured under what is known as regulatory takings. This includes both farm land and urban family homes. Waitaki landowners have lodged a petition at Petitions.nz opposing ‘property overlays’ in the draft Waitaki Draft District Plan. Groundswell NZ are supporting this community initiative and urge all Waitaki residents to sign the petition in support of their fellow residents impacted by this draconian council proposal. However, it is not just Waitaki council causing major community upheaval. Timaru, West Coast, Gore, and Hutt City district councils are all pursuing a similar strategy - Groundswell NZ receive more complaints about Section 6 classifications than any other unworkable law. While some councils have hit pause, others like those above are ploughing ahead in defiance of the governments call and landowners pleas for rational strategies and genuine consultation. Groundswell NZ are issuing an urgent call for the government to suspend all Section 6 classifications, not just SNAs – coupled with a very clear message to councils that the legislation will be changed.
