There was nothing wrong with the British IC engines from the 50's & 60's except for the oil leaks. and Lucas Electrics

America's cup for me...
It's all about design, mates sailing against mates, money, elitism, egos, 3.9 years of bullshit posturing, corporate influence, advertising, pathetic boring personalities, and fast boats doing fuck all to highlight the sailors or crew work!
The racing is like watching the tour de France on E bikes for 20 minutes.
Heres what it should be...
Boats that require sailors to manually grunt their sorry arses around a impossibly hard course in any weather conditions, sailed on courses where there are " close engagements, danger, no boundaries, the odd collision, crewed by a teams that actually changes or hoists differing sails on different legs, led by a skipper not afraid to give the opposition jip on and of the water.... And races that are 3 hours long and sailed in any condition ( not 12 to 12.0001 knot
A true test!
The rest ( how you get there, who's paying, who they are, who) is superfluous.
I want substance not image

The AC is now all about money, as in how much of everyone elses can they drag in.
Tried to watch the last one, watched one race, started the next to realise one is all you need to see to get all you're going to see. The one before that I went to outer Mongolia to get away from the wankery....yeah Ok there was a certain appeal about being able to go max throttle on Yammy WR450's for 4000km that helped. The AC before that was so exciting I can't remember it, in fact bar the muppetry that was the hula challenge the next AC back I can remember anything of substance about is Perth.
As Schooner notes these days why bother with having sailors aboard anyway, a pimply 14yo with a remote control would give the exact same coverage and result.

The problem I had was the viewing experience in Auckland was no better than being anywhere else in the world. The spectator fleet was so busy all you could see was 2 mast tops occasionally zipping past in the distance. So you needed to livestream to find out what was actually happening. But everyone else was trying to do the same for the same reason so no bandwidth. So you ended up leaving the area to get a decent view online and wondering why you bothered inviting a boatload of politely disappointed guests.

FOGG I agree, I had my brother and wife come up from Dunedin, to spend a few days up watching racing AC Finals… we ended up just sailing to Calypso Bay, and watching it online,. So when he flew home, and his friends asked if he watched the Cup races, he could reply yes, we sailed out and watched it live , from onboard family yacht . No lies there
It just wasn’t worth going out to the action, far nicer to relax at anchor in a bay !

All of which kind negates the benefits of having it in Auckland for spectator purposes. It's still nice to have the event in town for the other aspects such as the 'buzz' of seeing the boats & crews around the waterfront for months on end and the alleged economic benefits (although that's a moot point). But anyone who rented out their home to an AC crew /family at inflated rates for 12-18 months will confirm some $$$ benefits flow into the local economy.
But with today's amazing TV & livestreaming coverage with the modern graphic overlays etc - it's hard to argue we should be fighting to keep it in Auckland for spectator purposes.

Talk about a pack of miserable buggers.... going out there day after day was awesome, the atmosphere was fantastic, so what if you couldnt see it. It set people up for some great evenings and fun... when we were allowed fun.... fun is fun and often its not sitting alone on ones boat bitching about other people having fun, whilst complaining that 'your' bay is getting ruined cause a Piedy turned up!
It was awesome and over way to soon, and I doubt anyone overseas who didnt see all those boats going out everyday didnt think, shit that looks like a great place to visit....more cash for free
As the event, it generates (normally) tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars over its lifecycle to the host country.
Kids go to schools for years, gst is paid and paid and paid, houses are bought, babysitters employed....the list goes one.
Then there is all the boats that normally arrive, lets just pick on the J Classes.
I think 8 or 9 were booked to come, each has its own superyacht, each superyacht has its on helicopter, each of these requires servicing, fuel, parts...etc the list goes on and on and on.
Don't underestimate how much these events generate...

Its a bit like clubbing until dawn then trying it at 58. The AC is boring after the first couple of races.
Perth was the best. And when Aussies won it off dennis
