Not talking 50year old engines. Relatively low hours from new or rebuild but the rest of the boat is a bloody disaster. Just a complete lack of maintenance from steering systems, after coolers, heat exchangers, osmosis and a complete lack of understanding of the boats systems. Coming from a lifetime of sailing and having an understanding of all the boats systems, this launch buying has been an eye opener. All my boats I have sold have been in top condition, seems like I am in the minority. My Lotus we just sold was 40 years old and mint with a 3 cylinder Volvo with only 170 hrs on the clock. Maybe I should have kept it. yes. First yacht "well maintained" but still had a stack of maintenance to catch up on. First launch. Actually very well maintained. Owned by an engineer. Second launch. Moderately maintained I think after having a bit spent on her. But needed all coolers done, engine painting and quite a bit of other stuff. Current launch, okay maintained by 2 owners back. One we bought from seemed religious on oil and filters, but nothing else.
So have had all coolers done, turbos, exhaust elbow, shaft bearings (they were scary worn), electronics, battery charger, helm seats, mattresses, interior clean (was very dirty), some pumps replaced, new taps, shower stuff etc.
We are great people to buy boats from
My focus is usually engines and ancillaries first, steering etc. Then in parallel we usually start upgrading the interior, then electronics.

Had a boat surveyed a few weeks ago. What a nightmare the engineering was. lifted bout of water and all shaft bearings, cutlass and strut very nearly non existent on the starboard side. Shaft out of alignment, engine beds suspect, grease line to rudder bearing had disintegrated. Thats only a brief sample of what was found, not to mention the osmosis. Supposed to be a top example. Have another Tui's.

I would post a photo of our port shaft bearing if I knew how. P bracket had to be removed and reseated to line shaft up, then engine shimmed. Worth doing, with props balanced as well she is super smooth now

What I was trying to say was the shaft bearings were completely worn on the right hand side. Shaft stut had to be removed and realigned.

Perusing Trademe and brokers listings it is surprising how relatively few boats, including those 30+ yr old are for sale.

Hi CZ. All the boats I have looked at, namely Mk1 Corsairs and Pelins are getting very old now. Had two offers accepted but the survey reports were not so good. Lots of engineering issues and osmosis. To me, it seemed like I was spending a lot of money just to inherit someone else's problems. The Admiral and I both love fishing, so I went and bought a reasonably new Haines Hunter fizz nasty, only got 40hrs on the motor. Still able to go up to Auckland and get out on our sons Riv, so a bit of a compromise. All the older boats turned out to be a bit of a mine field. Made me realise how good our Lotus was.

When we can’t afford the combination of launch and Westhaven we will go to a tinny or similar. Still have a few years on the westhaven lease (2029) but then we will be out of that boating market.

Have you had any thoughts about one of the shared ownership schemes? I know they have their pluses and minuses ie not YOUR boat and cannot use it at the drop of a hat, but work for some

Chariot, just curious, do you know if the boats you knocked back subsequently sold and if yes was the price similar to your offers? Always seem to be some optimists out there

You wont regret it,at home, weather can be nasty and you know its secure, and whats more you will use it more than you think. When I had the yacht, was away every weekend or 2,racing when it was on.Then the boys started uni and wife busy, solo is great for awhile, used it once every 6 weeks.same maintaince, now with the nasty. It get used almost every weekend or find some reason to tinker with. brought at 105hrs 90hp now 140hrs in almost 18 months, but we dont travel far, lucky to do a 1hr each trip,no need too.Fish your feet first. Have a spot in 4m just 0.5km from ramp ,september/octber and march/april is good there. Failing that 20 minute rid to kaiaua farms. If adventerous across to coro farms Manai harbour 30 minutes. Which reminds must go to ESK pt coro harbour for a kingfish soon. Got told it will be good for 1500hrs being 2 stroke but wiring will need doing by then. Now whose a electrical engineer or as he keeps correcting me Megatronics??Number 1 son

I like my overnighting so one option should I part ways with CZ is a mega trailer boat, I like the look of Dan Leech's cats eg leechboats.com/power/l875-semi-displacement-power-catOne of these launches at Sandspit. There are some related costs on top of the boat, $30k+ for the trailer (fully braked + breakaway system) and a decent tow vehicle. The Sandspit guy tows his with a 100 series cruiser, say with half full tanks and an alloy trailer he just squeaks under 3500kg. You would need at least a Cruiser or Y62 Patrol (thirsty!!), better a RAM or Silverado or even a 4.5t truck to tow. No way would you put one of these behind a dual cab ute for any distance, it would be classic tail wagging dog. But once set up you could travel further afield for a summer to the North Is or Sth Is lakes, Marlborough sounds etc.

The boat review articles always seem very quiet on it, unless it is a tinny tinny or a new design cat. Makes the fish very expensive if you boost around the Gulf chasing workups. It would be fascinating to know the annual cost of fuelling one of those things compared with the days of use and comparative cost to marina and yacht maintenance. Oh, and being able to get to a boat ramp on those cracking days when the rest of Auckland is doing the same. I saw something like 50 boats queing to get in at the Gulf Harbour ramp once. While the costs of my pile mooring have been going up alot, I'm going to hang onto it like shit sticking to a blanket. An affordable spot to park your boat is like rocking horse shit these days.

Both boats are still on the market. I could have got one for 85k and osmosis solutions gave me a quote of 46k for an osmosis repair, but the rest of the boat was very tired. After cooler hadn't been looked at for 5 years, lots of other engineering issues so I walked away. The other boat is now asking less than what I offered. Had too many issues for me to list. HT, don't have to go far to catch fish down here in Whitianga. We only live 1 km from the boat ramp, so it is all very quick to get into the water.
