Will be interesting to see what contracting model is adopted, I expect an alliance type because contractors are very reluctant to go down the PPP option. Why's that ya reckon?
Personally I think $2.60 for the new motorway* is awesome and I happily pay it. A little pissed 2 wheels cost the same as 4 though, that just make zero sense on multiple levels.
* - yes it is technically just for the old new northern but the cunning buggers designed the new bit so you can't get on or off so the toll covers it all. Which I have little doubt will be the excuse used to bang the toll even higher again, the bastards.

Only people who made any money on P2WK are the bankers who put the financing package together, the construction JV have lost heaps P2WK was intended to be tolled, as part of construction we installed foundations for the camera gantry and ran all the conduits under the road for cabling - I recall this was somewhere around the fish farm. NZTA went to the market for tenders for the camera gantry structure but then the political decision was made not to toll the new section.
NZTA gets the toll money from the gantry at Orewa, there is an incredible 40% admin "cost" associated with its collection.

Banks win, everyone else loses. Gosh, why is that totally not a surprise.
Yeah the admin costs are bollix and I bet there is a lot of pork in them for someones pockets.
Were the plinths for the tolling the ones that have just suddenly sprouted some colourful salt and pepper shakers?

We are still in Canada so have not seen those yet, return end of week. If they are close to the northern side of Johntone Hill tunnels, then the answer is no, those pedestals were always built for the Maori "art works" , with an associated "off the planet price", that must have finally been installed.
Is there anything hanging off the Moir Hill bridge yet? There is another "art work" to go there
There is provision in the design of the P2WK motorway to build an on and off ramp to serve South Warkworth in the future, somewhere near Valerie Cl or Perry Rd

Yeap 4 only just north of the tunnel. The thingys on them popped up last week.
Art works? they are colourful. I must suss closer next passing. I bet someones driving a new Ferrari after the big seagul/bird statue thingy the the Warkworth end. It, like far too many, screams 'we hate you fucking over the poor but we'll still spend a stupid over the top amount for some vanity shit'.
Why put big works like that in a place where no one can see them or only gets a momentary fleeting glimpse. Seems a spectacular exercise in 'Why would ya?'.

All the artworks were provided ie paid for by the taxpayer, by Hokai Nuku the consortium of Iwi created by NZTA. All the foundations were part of the scope of the P2WK project
The bird was made by some sculptor dude in Wanganui, not a trace of Maori in him. It was sent to site in 3 pieces and he was supposed to come to site to weld it together. however when he learnt that to work on site he would have to undergo a drug test he suddenly lost any desire to finish the job. There was then a huge argument with HN as to who was responsible for the assembly of said bird. It has not proven very durable, has been removed once or twice for repairs to the wings so far.

I made a Gin for my neighbour who is in a wheelchair, he was in a army wagon that went bad, real bad. He uses medicinal vegetation to help with pain and so on. In chatting about distilling we wondered. So I made a special run just for him, a full botanical with added Hmmmm. It is labelled 'Special Reserve Green Gin' and carrys 2 warnings, one being 'watch out for motorbikes' the other being 'Do not consume within a few days of any mandatory Drug Tests' No you don't have a couple of quiet Gins then get the munchies but it does taste quite yummy, got an earthie vibe gong on and a nice lingering but soft finish. But he want me to make another with extra added Hmmmmm to see if we can get him the munchies, I'm keen to continue a bit of RnD work on what might be the first Drinkable
Had a closer suss of the salt and pepper shakers. If you are quick and looking for it there is a couple of small bits that suggest they are Maori something. Seems a but Errrr? having them there as everyone is moving fast and they suddenly pop up so you need a few passings to even workout what they are, not unlike the rusting maoris on the hill. Easier to see but needs a few passing to workout what they are.
The seagull maybe a hawk but it maybe a really angry seagull. Again why there where no one can really have a decent look at it.
But I am a bit confused as to why Maori force this whatever to happen while they bitch and wine they deserve to be given more coin. Da!! you can have kids with full bellies or spend the money on things people are very easily confusing as kitchen equipment.
In other news - when you leave the new motorway at Walkworth heading north, where the seagul/hawks is, if you look left fast there is a 50fter+/- mastless yacht under a cover sitting there. There was a H28 or similar but it's been replaced by this newer bigger beast. When we came down last evening we noticed it has fallen over onto its port side. We think wind or just a shit cradle. Either way it looks very not good but we remember it being reasonable clear around it so fingers crossed only scratched paintwork. When coming south as you pass the house builder place glance a little to your right, it should be easily seen.

Its a start, worth reading the whole announcement. " Channel Infrastructure NZ Limited (NZX:CHI) announces it has entered into a conditional project
development agreement with Seadra Energy Inc, who is partnering with consortium members Qantas,
Renova Inc, Kent Plc, and ANZ (the “Seadra Consortium”), to develop a biorefinery at Channel’s Marsden
Point site. Should the project proceed, the proposed biorefinery could become an anchor tenant for
Channel’s Marsden Point Energy Precinct." channelnz.com/investor-centre/nzx-announcements/

Everyone has worked out that trying to disassemble and ship offshore cracking columns is not viable, so they might as well use the cracking columns to refine something here, just like we used to refine oil, which we aren't allowed to do any more. My nephew is an electrical engineer at a large refinery West of Melbourne, he and his team got flown over to Fungarei to suss a large item at the refinery. A compressor I think. One of the key considerations is if it can be shipped, and how to ship it. They are interested and believe it can be shipped. It is worth something in the 10's of millions. They want a spare one for their refinery. So, all in all, it sounds like Marsden Point is being treated as a spare parts shop now, as in a wreckers yard for bits and pieces. Hope this latest consortium makes it work and does something productive with what was previously a productive asset.

There is a very smart boatbuilder working on his classic launch in the shed next to us. Been building ETNZ boats for several cycles. Chatting about his engines, he very proudly told me they are straight naturally aspirated with NO ELECTRONICS. No electronic fuel injection, no black boxes. And they are modern engines too, not 1950's Gardner's or Ford's. Think he said they were Hyandai's. And the rest of the boat is very high tech. Currently installing a gyro-stabiliser. So yes, the people that know have a strong aversion to little black boxes... If they are new and more than ~100hp they will be ECU controlled, turbo charged with common rail injection, only way to meet Tier II emissions. Unfortunately you cannot buy a new compliant 6 litre diesel to replace the old 100 Fords that does not have all these add ons. The little Kubota based conversions (Nanni, Beta),small Volvo's and JH series Yanmars (and maybe Lombardinis) can still sneak under the Tier II requirements, but even with Yanmar in Europe and USA the new JH series engines are all ECU controlled common rail. When I was sussing a new engine for CZ I wanted the simplest engine as possible, selected the 4JH4 Yanmar, no electric lift pump (the 4JH5 has this), no glow plugs, no solenoid fuel valve to be held open, no transmission oil cooler, can stop it by sliding the rack closed. Only time electricity is needed is to crank it, everything else is mechanical. Please let us know what the engines are..
OK, the engines are Vetus 80 hp's. Zero electronics anywhere. Apparently in this size they are Hyundai bases, hence why I was thinking they were Hyandai Seasals. Most of Vetus's bases are Mitsi, I think in the smaller sizes.

Interesting, so the block is a marinised Hyundai D4B industrial engine, 2.6L capacityand unusually for an industrial engine with an SOHC, needs that to rev to 4,00rpm to get the 80hp rating, you would never run it above 3000rpm normally in the boat. The 65hp is the same engine with revs limited to 3,000rpm
I see the Vetus web site says "only available for sale outside the EU", so I guess does not meet Tier II emissions Did you know Yanmar owns Vetus?
