Talking to a couple of architect mates over the w/e.
One is scrambling to find a new job as his project is coming to an end and he doesn't see anything else to keep him busy. But he's not finding anything.
Another who recently moved jobs has a friend whose company has layed off several of thier staff.
Chippy mate who lives in Cambridge said one of the firms down there recently laid off 9 of thier staff (not sure total headcount of company but can't be that big in a town like that).
But same mate is snowed under, poss because he's farkn good and works like a trojan.
Next 6 months could get pretty grim for some people by the sounds.

Engineering consultancies have stopped hiring, with a number doing lay-offs at the moment. Govt have turned the tap off on everything, so many outfits workload is falling off a cliff. Education buildings programme stopped, 3 waters stopped, with at least a 3 year delay on getting anything going, Auckland and Wellington transport programmes in disarray (Regional fuel tax and Lets get Welly moving). I'm not across NZTA roading projects but understand there is a massive lag from the change of govt changing the work programme and priorities. Not sure what residential building is doing, but interest rates are high. I think the only thing keeping that sector going is massive immigration. Country was already in recession for the last 6 months of last year, current govt is talking about austerity, even though the don't call it that. to be fair, the last lot were spraying money around like confetti, problem is the party is over now, and lots of people are going to have nasty hangovers. A big issue is around certainty, driven by the change of govt. Sure this new govt has nailed through it's 100 day plan, but that was almost exclusively undoing everything done over the last 6 years. On all the important things, all they have done is appoint specialist panels to investigate and report back. That includes state housing, 3 waters, education building and parts of transport (Cook straight crossing for example) and they are still formulating a new transport strategy.

I get to chat to many each day and due to tge nature of the beast many are CEOs and the like. None like tge current economy and gave seen today coming for well over a year if not longer.
Last week the owner if a decent sized building mob, who target a sell price of 750-800k said they have stop building them until their current stock sells. Their biggest customer over the last few years was the Govt Kiwi build programme. They do northland down to Walkworth.
Nephew works for north shore real estate big name. He saying the new terrace housing that are popping up hand over fist is not selling due to sellers wanting/needing prices no kne is willing to pay.

People seem to have forgotten that most of Labour's "projects" were not going to happen due to lack of funding www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2024/03/unaffordable_and_undeliverable.htmlopens The Herald reports: Of the currently estimated $280 billion required to deliver these investments, only $80 billion has been appropriated.” Officials warned that the $280b cost of that investment “far exceeds the funding available”. They sought new transport minister simeon brown to note that Labour's planned investment was “unaffordable and undeliverable”. this is Labour's transport package. They announced projects which had no capacity to be delivered or funded, yet they continued to try and pull off what was effectively a con job.

Bayfair shopping centre is going to be open as a test case for malls in NZ. www.bayfair.co.nz/opening-hours/Yes tourist hot spots have able to open Good Friday/Easter Sunday. Taupo etc Do you remember when you couldn't buy anything on a Saturday or Sunday? Everything was shut? You had to go to Church, cause that was all that was open on a Sunday. Easter is a Christian religious festival. Some tiny proportion of the country are religious, or Christian for that matter. So it's beyond me why people can't go shopping if they want to on a particular day. If people want to work, they can, and get double time. If people don't want to work those days, that is their choice to. I'm not seeing what the issue is?

By the time you pay time 1/2 + lui day is it worth it? Oh dont try to charge me extra %10 because your open ,thats when I walk away. 5 day or maybe 1/2 Saturday is ampal. Worked for Mum/Dad. We got to saturday sport. Management have looked at working/delivering xmas day/Sundays.Sure I said no problem.Just start without me.

One of my first actions as your new Prime Minster would be to ban Sunday shopping.
You do realise the staff who work on Public holidays are effectively on double time. They get paid for the Stat holiday and then get a day off in lieu. Doubling staff costs would easily make some places unprofitable.
If a company has 5 staff members who each spend 7min in the dunny twice a day that means over the course of a year the company pays 8 weeks wages just for people to have a shit. The ball park cost to a company of staff is what they are paid times 2. For many like Hospo if you open on a Stat you do need to do a lot more sales than usual. A quick dirty workout here means we'd need to do 1.4 times our usual sales to cover the extra cost. Then for the likes of hospo add in the extra food costs and wastage. Add things like that up and it's not hard to see how opening on Stats can get quite expensive quickly. After sussing what it would cost me I think a 10 or 15% surcharge is bloody cheap, especially for the likes of hospo.

But as a business owner, do you think you should be able to decide if you open or stay closed? Or is it better big govt tell you how to run your business? If you are allowed to open on a stat, there is no law saying you have to. There are examples of businesses that do very well trading on stat days like Easter. Garden centres are possibly the best example.

Not sure but would say the law has changed severly in Aussie. 1983 a pub/bar/hotlel could open on Sunday providing no paid staff, had to be owner/family owner. The local in the snowy mountains ,opened midday closed 6.00pm. Think in NZ cheaper to stay closed for most cafes etc by the time you pay staff. Dont give the bit providing a service when hamburger chains open and no surcharges.

Dont give the bit providing a service when hamburger chains open and no surcharges. You guys are missing the point. You keep on giving examples about the economics of opening. What I am pointing out is, why can't the business owner make the decision to open? The current situation you have big govt telling business owners how to run their business. Who is that good for? There are enough sectors of society that would jump at the chance to make some money over Easter. Uni students are an obvious one, no lectures, so get some hours in so they can buy food. I don't see why the govt needs to get involved with this level of detail in our society. Society isn't a nuclear family with mum dad and two kids anymore, taking the kids to sport on Saturday and Church on Sunday. It is a far more diverse society and people should be able to do what they want. Earn some money or enjoy a religious holiday, what ever they want.
