What does an ex MP know about running a railway or a ferry service? Fourth KiwiRail board director quits Another KiwiRail director has resigned from the board after Finance Minister Nicola Willis warned a “refresh” was coming. KiwiRail confirmed former Labour MP and Minister Maryan Street’s resignation will take effect on July 31. Rachel Pinn, a transport consultant, and Ed Sims, the former chief executive of Canadian airline WestJet, have also quit. Board chairman David McLean is finishing his term early at the end of this month. The Herald previously revealed Willis told McLean the week before she announced his early retirement that KiwiRail had spent an “excessive and not justifiable” amount on McKinsey consultants. Treasury has now released a document inviting applications for positions on KiwiRail’s board. It said shareholders want “drastically improved health and safety outcomes” and a response to reviews into “serious issues” involving Interislander ferries in recent years. The main task for the board in the short to medium term was to urgently improve the company’s financial performance and reduce the level of dependency on Crown funding, the document said. Expectations from shareholding ministers included ensuring ferry operations remained safe at all times. “And KiwiRail executes a maintenance programme that is aligned with best practice and responds to the reviews into serious issues that have arisen in recent years.” www.newstalkzb.co.nz/news/national/interislander-aratere-ferry-returns-to-service-fourth-kiwirail-director-quits-ex-army-colonel-joins-executive/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR2AyJB6NCsnefqJxHW2LOskGLU1Kzxhv9dhdbVf9k09uDeeqNLaQV17yyE_aem_pr0Pgni_NlJ5pZLyuaL4dA#Echobox=1721260425

Appointments like that are make work schemes for those who have proven to be that stupid they couldn't be employed in a real job.

Appointments like that are make work schemes for those who have proven to be that stupid they couldn't be employed in a real job. Which makes me very concerned that Paula Benefit has been appointed to Chair Pharmac... But that said, I am constantly amazed at the number of washed out MP's that appear on key Boards around the country. There was a no name Labour list MP from my area (Marja Lubeck) that was on the Board of the utterly failed Polytech entity. She may have possibly been the Chair. Previous experience, other than no name list MP, was an airline hostess.

Become PM, fuck and entire country and the pollies will reward you with a gong. Mainly as they want one when they get booted as well.
But the voters have let them do it so should they really be bitching at the results of their own lethargy, I'd argue they can't and should just STFU.....or get off their arse and do something about it.
And I was going to use Pulla Benefit as an example in that very post...for the same reason.

The brand new, just delivered barge for Westport has run aground on Carters Beach, south of river mouth. Large SW swells reported all week.
Just trying to find some more info.

Interislander Cook Strait ferry mayday: KiwiRail fined $412,500 for power loss incident Sobbing passengers filmed final farewells to loved ones as the Interislander ferry Kaitaki drifted, powerless, towards the rocky shore, a court has heard. The chaos and fear on board the vessel - including people crying, vomiting, and having panic attacks - has been described in harrowing victim impact statements in the Wellington District Court this afternoon. Other victims spoke of not truly realising how dangerous the January 2023 mayday incident was until they disembarked, and saw the huge emergency response awaiting on shore. The details were read out at today’s sentencing for KiwiRail, which operates the Interislander ferry. KiwiRail earlier pleaded guilty to exposing its passengers and crew to harm. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/interislander-cook-strait-ferry-mayday-kiwirail-fined-412500-for-power-loss-incident/5ERUQU734BBBRMBGG4GTWVVX4M/

This is the one when all engines failed in 25 gusting 35 off Sinclaire head with 800 passengers onboard, 2nm off a lee shore with zero hope of rescue, cause they didn't replace a $130 expansion joint. Once they got close enough to the rocky shoreline their anchors actually held, there but for the grace of god. But to be fair, I understand how you could mix up Kiwirails ferry incidents. There are many incidents. They couldn't organise a root in a whore house.

"The wind was blowing about 30 knots, with gusts of 45 knots, and the swell was about 3m." "a crew member advised Maritime NZ’s Rescue Co-ordination Centre that at their current rate of drift they had about 12 minutes until they reached shallow dangerous waters"
Given the weather conditions at what point do you evacuate, How long would it take to get 850 passages off the ship into life rafts/boats ?

"a crew member advised Maritime NZ’s Rescue Co-ordination Centre that at their current rate of drift they had about 12 minutes until they reached shallow dangerous waters" Given the weather conditions at what point do you evacuate, How long would it take to get 850 passages off the ship into life rafts/boats ? Having recently read the Wahine book, I wouldn't evacuate at all. Getting 800 people into the water, or liferafts and what not, is going to result in a percentage of deaths. The highest proportions being babies, children and the elderly. More so, what happens to your liferaft if you launch it on a rocky lee shore in 30 gusting 45?!? Even if you manage to launch a lifeboat without people panicking, jumping off the the ferry, falling over and getting trampled in a panic to get into the lifeboat, etc, how can you handle a lifeboat in 30 gusting 45 one a rocky lee shore? Assuming the lifeboats have motors and steering. It would be a clusterfuck. I'd keep everyone on the boat, and if it drifts onto the rocks and gets holed, at least in shouldn't sink below the water. It should just get stuck. The lower decks would flood, but everyone should be safe staying onboard. The ferry would be a write off, but 800 passengers plus crew is a hell of a lot of lives worth protecting at the cost of an old ship. You'd then need every rescue helo in the country to start flying people off the ferry, but if they are safe enough, as in not going into the water in large swells on a rocky lee shore, at least they are basically safe until they can be flown off. PS I don't think we, or the wider public, are really aware of how close this incident came to being a major, major mass casualty event. I didn't realise the weather was that bad. Media at the time said they were drifting fast toward the rocky coast, and it was very lucky the anchors took. They didn't mention 30 gusting 45 and a 3 m swell. There was and still is zero assets available to assist in any meaningful way. No suitable tug boats, which was a recommendation from the Wahine disaster. Overall, there is a very limited number of boats that could even operate in those conditions on that coast. Maybe the Police launch Lady Liz, and a Coastguard boat, maybe 2 if one came over from Picton or Nelson. A handful of private boats could operate in those conditions, but the vast majority of private boats would just be a liability. But no ability to save the ferry, and no capacity to get large numbers off it, other than a handful of people at a time. All for a $130 fitting that should have been replaced at 2 years, and was 5 years 8 months old...
