We up to total lose, OUCH!!!!
Some of the commentary out there about the Skipper is a tad marginal and some just yucky. She's going to cop all manner of crap, both via the web and officially, the Navy takes a very dim view of shit like that. No matter what happened she will be caned and not in the fun way. No way I'd want to be her about now.
She can claim no lives lost which suggest procedures were followed well once it kicked off, the Navy will like that bit.
But saturday night next to a reef with what some reports say was quite a few aboard, doesn't sound like a survey trip to me. Anyone check to see if P Diddys jet is in Samoa? It was in NZ last week.

Has a crew of 30 something, bunks for 66, but had 78 onboard... Noting that "the crew and passengers" were evacuated safely. Since when do navy assets take passengers? Fully agree on the comments about the skipper coping it. She is not going to be in a great place with loosing a ship, and there is going to be unwarranted comments about everything, not least the gender and sexuality bit.

It was added to the navy fleet in 2019 at a cost of $147 million.

at first some news were reporting $147mil, odt = otago daily timesbut if you follow that link to the story it has been re-edited to the lower figure www.odt.co.nz/news/national/nz-navy-ship-sinks-samoaa new take on 'cost minimisation' though it was sold to the navy for $103 million
and you'd expect the refit to be pretty expensive

The "old" Manawanui's home port was Whitianga and she used to tie up to the wharf each Anzac Day and take part in the ceremony. When the new one was commissioned they made its home port Gisborne. I don't know the protocol but I'm guessing you can't re-use a home port.

ran on to the reef last night, motoring it off ripped it open?
One of the life boats capsized on the reef, Golding said. The weather was "extremely challenging" and when people were being rescued from the life rafts one flipped. Those inside had to walk to land.
The ship was listing heavily at 6.40am on Sunday and it capsized and sank about 9am.

Since when do navy assets take passengers? Get with the program dude. Crew are the people who run the boat. Passengers are the people who are part of the program/deployment. Could be air force catching a ride, could be saw snipers getting dropped off. Most likely in this case it's private consultants and contractors with expertise in oceanography.

No need to open with telling me to get with the programme. Until we know otherwise, it could be half the nearest village on a Saturday night booze cruise. Given that there were more passengers than bunks, one has to ask that question. If they were legit passengers, as in military of other disciplines or consultants etc, and they were working at night, you would have assumed they wouldn't exceed the number of bunks. Sure, it is more likely the passengers were legit, but it is not normal for a navy ship, designed for surveying, to wreck itself on a reef, catch fire and sink. So until we know what happens, speculation is going to fill the void.

Get on a proper destination race boat and see how it works. 4 bunks 12 crew 5 days at sea. The military do this as well. For 16 hours of the day you don't actually need your bunk so someone else can use it.

She'll get a medal for saving the crew. Well deserved more like a court martial. With the equipment that ship had there will be no excuse for running aground, unless mechanical failure, even then not an excuse. Looking old world navigators. Got from England back England using a compass/sextant no charts.

75 people on board, including seven citizens on scientific work and four foreign personnel, got on liferafts and tried to move away from the reef so they could be rescued.
