Most countries don't have a "chief puppeteer" ........but the strings are getting tangled and will get chopped.

In response to OH comment that nobody cares about covid. We have just returned from Rarotonga. The same applies there. No restrictions and nobody appears to care. Life goes on as normal. Same here in India. Normal everywhere except on flights and in the hospitals. Otherwise BAU.

Was just discussing this with my partner and she’s from the UK …she reminded me that the UK and NZ have a pretty relaxed visa arrangement . iwh.co.nz/uk-options/uk-visa-information/maybe that’s why NZ universities have been left off the list ?

I feel it’s more likely that NZ’s unis aren’t regarded as good enough to make the list - which was originally the Sunday Times global top 50 universities - which the UK govt has adopted for this scheme.

Yeah well they are pretty shit really . I went to Auckland uni in the 90s on a fake student ID for years , very cheap drinks and intelligent good looking women to talk to about Kevlar sails and the like .

But I’m sure that at some point in the last 20 yrs since I arrived in NZ that at least one NZ uni (Auckland?) made it onto the radar of global tier 1s. I remember a friend’s daughter having graduated from NZ applying for a PhD at Oxford and getting in partly due to her good alumni status ie a 1st from Auckland Uni I think it was.
But that seems to have dropped away.

But that seems to have dropped away. I attended Engineering School at Auckland Uni in the early 80's. I remember during my time there asking Prof Peter Jackson (no, not the film director , the fluid mechanics guru) after he returned from sabbatical in the US how AUES compared with institutions such as MIT and he answered surprisingly well. Alot of the technical advances behind NZ's international yachting success originated from students who attended around that time.
