I think it’s fuckin great . NZ refining is an independent company so can do whatever blows their skirt up on the day . im looking at the smog cloud from that place now and could smell the bugger yesterday when we were racing . we live 15k from the refinery at 320m above sea level and have a very good horizontal view of the shit that place spews . On a clear morning like this with a morning land breeze the smog layer sits a few hundred meters up is about 50 metres thick and extends way out to sea . call me a weirdo greenie if you please but it’s a shithole and a massive money sink that place . I’ve surfed at ocean beach and gagged on the fumes , I’ve lived across the harbour from it and had headaches from the fumes , we bailed from Marsden cove last weekend after the Route66 cause it stunk so bad . I think the fuel import model is a good idea , import cheap fuel from countries where they don’t have to spend millions on PPE and two “tool box talks “ per day and employ H and S officers etc . there’s a big Co2 food packaging plant in Hamilton and meat is predominately packed in Co2 packs now in trays with the plastic film lid that’s glued on .

I live in One tree point. Often wondered where green PEACE are. It's been spewing black smoke for 2 weeks. Apparently it's the final time it will do this as most of the smoke is part of the de commissioning program. The last tanker left yesterday. No more refining.

Government Will " temporarily" reduce fuel taxes today.
Will they go the full amount (50% ish) which means a 91 octane price $1.50 per L ... I doubt it.
$2.50 per Litre is My pick.

Double glazed is bliss. Moved here a year ago and love it. Get your quoter of the beach, great beaches, great cafes, quietest place I have ever lived (and I have lived on lifestyle blocks in the middle of nowhere.)

Fucking amazeballs what happens when the polls are down. I love the careful curation of the message to protect the govt's support partner though... this from Stuffed. "About 77c of every litre of petrol is made up of direct fuel taxes, plus an extra 10c in Auckland - and then GST is charged." No mention of how much we pay in ETS per litre - the Greens would die if that number were common knowledge. And if the Greens die, who would support this minority govt? This story also didn't quantify the GST. GST is the variable part, the higher the price goes, the more GST Grant gets, to look smug with... Currently about 50 cents / litre is GST. Compared to the 77 cents excise, it is a fair bit. How much is the ETS again? about 17 cents? www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/300540207/jacinda-ardern-says-government-will-consider-cutting-fuel-tax

Yes, agree, its so quiet and peaceful, we bought a place at OTP late last year, absolutely loving it. Water is very clear , and fish life abundant. Occasional distant "thump" as ships load, and have not yet noticed any smell or smoke etc

call me a weirdo greenie if you please You greenie weirdo.
My pleasure
I've always wondered if it had a visible output. I flew over it one day and right on the edge of the red zone (it has a exclusion zone around it surface to 3500ft) and got a strong whiff of petroleum like product. After making sure it wasn't the aircraft I was driving it had to be the refinery. It wasn't a nice feeling.

So you are HAPPY to have it closed and NZ import all fuel.Meanwhile another country with refineries has to put up the crap from a refinerary just to give us fuel??

If the fuel was cheaper overseas the fuel companies would have been importing it long ago, when was the last time you saw any green initiative that made some thing cheaper and more reliable?
