Meanwhile Toyota have announced there BEVs will have 1000-1500km range. Will have, or do have? Big difference between a pipe dream and doing it. That said, the technology is there now to do that range. Take a ute, fill the tray with batteries. Hook on a trailer, fill that with batteries, job done.

We only have 2 options, solar or a 2.3kw petrol genny. Maybe I need to build a bovine powered methane plant. As it pans out - in the quest for the best dunny options in rural we have discounted the connecting to a sewer as there is no sewer. No septic as it's just a mess to do and a tad redundant in todays world. So composting it is and the Wa has said no to the fancy bucket and chuck it type so a Sun-Mar Excel was the call. But we then ran into a version that can take any organic matter inc No1's and 2's from 2 or 4 legged excreaters, and produce a liquid fertilizer and biogas. As we don't want to use solid nitrogen ferts we've been using seaweed in the hay paddocks so having our our pooh powered liquid fert plant would be awesome. Plus run water heating and cooking off the biogas. So now doing the numbers to see if we can produce enough out the end to be viable, we don't want to have to have a vindaloo for breakfast to make enough gas to cook dinner with. So far we have found put how easy these units are to buy and to make if you're a little handy. So it'll be interesting to see where this leads.
Went down the Tron for a funeral on Wednesday, on the way back around Dury a ute with bullbars had mated with a tesla. Ute drove away fine, the Telsa is dead.
But then we did Field Days on Friday and on the way back not far passed Dury guess what we saw, another Tesla who'd mated with not sure what but the Tesla didn't survive that one either. So if you have a Tesla do not go down the south motorway past Manuku turn off, it's a Tesla killing zone
Lots of EV action at Field Days. The lads had a good suss of some BYD's and to be honest came away a little impressed. I can see why Telsa dropped it's price, BYD is kicking it's arse and I think with good reason. I think if I was going EV BYD would be my first call. No utes yet but apparently one is due any day.
Lots of pollys down there and with stands. I got accosted by a Lab party person as I wondered past. When I said and I made a point of saying it softy and very nicely 'I'm a older pale skin male who is an employer, pays a motherload of tax plus I farm using a ute, in what crazy as universe does the Labour Party want to be see in my presence?' they quickly realised I was a waste of time and retreated to a lonely looking stand. The Nats were going for it but I saw them coming so dodged them. The best polly stand was the Taxpayers Union, they were having a ball and it was going off. Mate with us sussed but Groundswell had run out of golf balls but they are planning another run of them, a double sized run, apparently they were one of the hottest items at the show.
A LOT of house building companies there looking for business.
Not as much innovation as I'd hoped for but a there were a few cool things.
Best part was it only cost me 2K for the visit. Got close to 72K but the lads talked me out of the excavators cabin and back to reality. They are right so I'll rent one for the small amount I need one for

Something happens to Teslas between Papakura and Drury, frequently, they die for some reason. Was at Field days Friday too, spoke with Act.Told them I dont like bald headed penis Luxon. They reckon the one to watch is winnie and despite Maori antics in Parliament they are still a threat Mitisbushi are pinning hopes on Act/Nats as there will be NO new ute tax.

Got a composter and and composting longdrop . Mum and daughter don’t mind it and we save a shed load of water in summer . Seriously looking for a good dessicating loo for the boat , 3 heads that are due for new pipe work and have tiny holding tanks . meanwhile the outlander PHEV is rapidly approaching the 200k mark still no problems and still on the original bloody brake pads . It’s 2013 and had done 70k ex Japan when we bought it .

There is quite a large range of the smaller composting loos that would work in a boat. One called OGO attracted my attention for functionality and size. But most of them are shortish term, 2 to 6 weeks sort of time frame depending on bums using them, before needing an empty which would be easy as on a boat but a pain at home. Hence we stepped up a grade to the Sun-Mar, that'll need an empty maybe once every 6 months probably quite a bit longer with just the 2 of us most of the time. But I'm still deep into my biogas sussing. If we could get that working we'd be sourcing 100% of our power, water and heating/cooking gas all on site, that would be cool.
But like EV's I think there is a green tax on composting dunnys as well. The price of them seems excessive for how simply made many are. The Sun-Mar we want is 3800 locally, 2100 if brought retail in Canada, where they are made. As an importer I can see some of the extra cost but still can't see where around 1000 of the NZ price is.
Battery cars are soooo 2020 these days. At field days we stumbled across a little tent on one of the car makers stands, Hyindry I think it was. In that was 2 boffin types from a NZ Uni with a working model of a hydrogen system. Super simple and they explained it real well. The downsides are 50% of the power generated is needed to extract the hydrogen and the obvious storage of the hydrogen. They had a BIG truck there powered by hydrogen. It has 6 big tanks (fibreglass by the looks) of hydrogen storage which gets that truck 400km at maximum load. As the tanks are in the chassis they don't detract from the loading ability. Basically bar a far large 'fuel tank' the hydrogen truck works just the same as a ICE.
The biggest issue the boffins said was hydrogen doesn't compact well so compressing it is a wee issue. The truck and other commercial size can store it at 450-500bar but for it to be real effective in a car it needs to be more around 700bar (a tad over 10,000 psi). That is one of the bigger issues holding it back today but boffins reckon a solution maybe close. Once they have cracked that then hydrogen will be the one to go for. With battery cars they reckon some are working on making a small hydrogen powered genny which makes lectrickery that then drives the car, just like EM and Fishs PHEV's except their ice motor will run on hydrogen not petrol.
The boffins with working example laid it out real well, it was one of the most interesting things there. If they are right them pure EV will be for close inner suburb use only due to easy charging but if you want any range you'll be getting that via hydrogen. We are about to see many hydrogen 'gas stations' appear and the majority will generate the hydrogen on site which is cool. But as the boffins also noted, they will consume a lot of electrickery and they didn't think that NZ's supply network is up to supplying all that will be needed.
Long story short, buy shares in power companies as no matter if it's Elons batteries or everyone elses hydrogen there is every sign we're going to need a shit load more elctrickery to power all this stuff.

Fonterra truck sparky has done in 12 months 5000km 140km range,so wwhy would you and now they are saying ,going to go 70% electric, maybe their rep cars but sure as heck wont be going from Takanini to Awawhitu penninsular. They loose 200lts pay load due to battery,no ruc on truck yet but pay on trailer.
Spoke to Hyundai again with their hydrogen truck and yep still cant do a AK to Wellington round trip as no Hydro stations.
Glad GO30 mentioned electricity,we cannot produce enough for all to have ev cars ,trucks and hydro,Hydro sucks more energy to produce than running the truck.
The phev makes a bit of sense but ice still drives vehicle when battery low or needs charging. Hence why I like the enote son brought, Prius motor which acts like a generator, doesnt have any drive capabilities, costing him roughly 3lts per 100km so theroy could fuel in AK and drive to Ch-Ch for 40lts or $100,unlike phev when braking, well you dont actually use the brakes, sends charge back to battery.
Toyota are releasing a ute soon that has clutch and makes noises like manual vehicle why.Fuck nose,
Public ev station.Hmm $10 for 100kms and takes 20 minutes, maybe ok around town but open country trip, nah. Fuel once and go.
The ACT Party lady asked me if Climate change is man made or natural.Only answer I could was man has a bit of effect but you cant change nature, been cycling for millions of yrs.

Thanks for the lead on the OGO loo . After a few hours squizzing the net and other forums it looks like a good replacement for our stinky hoses and pump n dump jabscos. Wife can’t handle the logistics with sea cocks etc and I don’t like giving loo lessons mid meal to newbies .

Wife can’t handle the logistics with sea cocks etc and I don’t like giving loo lessons mid meal to newbies . It's not a bad looking bit of gear that OGO. When sussing that 'class' of dunny i.e the short term use small compacts, it appealed the most. It's a handy boat package that's for sure.
I may need to put a poster above the Sun-Mar on how to operate it. Pretty simple - 'If you pee let it be, if you poop add a scoop'
