Just another example of the selfishness exhibited by too many EV owners.

Seems to be talk of $76 per 1000 kms on evs,tesla/byd etc.straight electric
$76 per 1000 kms on plug in hybrids but can claim the fuel tax back
If we forget about the price of fuel and just look at the tax,my fuel tax on a 1000kms is $42 at 75 cents tax. Not much incentive to go EV.

They won't give a tax refund for PHEV's that would be administratively impossible not to mention easily abused. PHEVs will either rget a pass until they bring in RUCS for the entire fleet or get a reduced RYC rate, but to do that they need to also bring in a vehicle specific carbon tax, otherwise many gas guzzlers will end up better off. Vehicle specific carbon tax + ruc and no fuel excise is the future.

The entire fleet. Petrol, Diesel, PHEV, HEV, BEV, Hydrogen - the lot. That's the future.

Everyone will be paying RUCs. The problem that this incompetent government will face with this model is that they will struggle to bring in a carbon tax in the current climate (ironic as that sounds). The issue with dropping the excise and moving to fixed RUC only model is that less efficient cars get off cheaper. So the government has to introduce a RUC fee based on vehicle efficiency as well... Which is fundamentally a carbon tax.

Hertz, which has made a big push into electric vehicles in recent years, has decided it's time to cut back. The company will sell off a third of its electric fleet, totaling roughly 20,000 vehicles, and use the money they bring to purchase more gasoline powered vehicles. Electric vehicles have been hurting Hertz's financials, executives have said, because, despite costing less to maintain, they have higher damage-repair costs and, also, higher depreciation. "[C]ollision and damage repairs on an EV can often run about twice that associated with a comparable combustion engine vehicle," Hertz chief executive Stephen Scherr said in a recent analyst call. And EV price declines in the new car market have pushed down the resale value of Hertz's used EV rental cars. "The MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price) declines in EVs over the course of 2023, driven primarily by Tesla, have driven the fair market value of our EVs lower as compared to last year, such that a salvage creates a larger loss and, therefore, greater burden," Scherr said. www.newshub.co.nz/home/money/2024/01/hertz-selling-20-000-electric-vehicles-to-buy-petrol-cars.html

Been sussing a new ute now there is no extra taxes on them. It will have to run on dinosaur juice as there are no other options and none close.
Shit choices and horrendous prices for such extensive use of old technologies as there is in the main stream brand names. Looks like another Ssingsong is on the cards, newer technologies and no brand price premium.
What's the difference between a EV owner and someone on the dole long term and someone inside for kiddy fiddling? They all bludge off the rest of society.
