Luxon has to be a dead cert National PM of the future but the question is whether it should be in this cycle or wait another round - for Labour to continue their decline and for another Nat Leader hopeful to do another caretaker opposition cycle to take Nats to another election defeat and then open the door for Luxon to step in for the election after next?

Luxon has to be a dead cert National PM of the future Don't think so, Luxon is no Key, has done nothing during his brief time as an mp and has zero personality - just another Muller, (remember him?). He ought to be in the Greens party given the views he holds. I don't think much of Mark Mitchell either, was our local mp for 12 yrs, did virtually nothing for the electorate but never missed a photo op. From the shallow talent pool my pick would be Shane Reti, but surprisingly he has not been mentioned

I agree with CZ. Shane Reti spoke very well at the presser. Besides, who would want an actual Doctor to lead the country through a pandemic? Not wanting to sound condescending (but will anyway), being Maori helps tick a minority box. But I liked his no nonsense style of speaking. No waffle. No glib catch phrases, no hand wringing (literally). A strong contrast to the waffle and twaddlebollocks from Ahdern.
Luxon makes my skin crawl - his is one of those religious conservative types. He'll be banning abortions and re-imposing prohibition given half the chance. Bridges? would be like ground hog day. Why would you re-elect someone that has already been dumped? Mark Mitchell only got nominated for Rodney after he called on his mate Cam Slater to do a hit job on the person that won the nomination. Mitchell was sloppy seconds. And yes, he has done nothing, said nothing, and got his photo taken lots.

Ok that’s interesting.
I don’t know Luxon personally and I’m trying to remove views on minor personality traits - I’m thinking more that Nats (and possibly NZ) might he hoping that Luxon could be a John Key Mk2 given he has (1) strong corporate background in executing stuff and (2) clean political slate (due to his relative inexperience).
Admittedly point 2 is a weakness more than a strength.
If I was a Luxon adviser I’d say “Don’t do it this time, get some more experience as an MP, address any perceived personality soft spots and wait until the next cycle.”

What if Nikki Kaye could he pursuaded to make a comeback? Bit tricky, in that she needs to be an MP now, and in Parliament for a decision by Tuesday. She was 'nice', but not PM material. Since she has left, she probably couldn't stand the thought of getting back into that snake pit.

kind of looks like bridges should be given his 2nd and last chance to show what he can do in the next 6 months
and if that's not much - his track record - HOPEFULLY in that time luxton will actually start making enough impact that he could be swapped in before the election
hey!
it worked for jacinda
....
but if they all keep squabbling about perceived insults and injustices or just failing to lift their game
reti could make hay
worked for scomo

Who ever gets in will very quickly become the focus of the media and troll armies. I'd expect they will quickly find links between the new leader, Trump, some alt right extremist group and HAL. Whomever the new leader is will be hammered in the press via all manner of innuendo and gossip dressed up as fact.
Luxton, Bridges or Mitchel won't be able to touch St Jacinda, they offer nothing new and can very easily be tarnished.

Chris Bishop is another name to keep an eye on. Diligent hard worker. Similar to Reti. I'd be interested in voting for either of them. Wont consider Bridges, Luxton or Mitchel.
Luxton wont run, its too early for him. He is most likely to take the associate Finance role and rid the coat tails in. This is what Key did, too inexperienced in politics to be party leader, but valuable and credible in the finance portfolio.
Personally, it is far to long till the next election for the next leader to survive. Most likely the next leader will be another seat warmer. From a policy point of view, there are plenty of easy wins against St Jacinda. You need to stay out of the 'personality' BS and get into the diligent hard working policy graft. Hence A Bishop or Reti, not a flash harry like Bridges, or Mitchel. I'm not really sure where Luxon fits, but I don't like him.

Sadly National has no Golden Bullet .The best NZ can hope for is that the Cindy Kindy keeps the Gatling gun trained on it's collective feet and they shoot themselves in the foot with their own golden bullet. Then NZ can do its usual thing and throw the incumbents out . In that event it won't really matter who gets it. Act,National coalition with Seymour/ Te Reti ? How about that ?

I am not a Luxon fan, but I was looking through their list and none of them are of interest to me

Does anyone know what Simon Bridges actually said to Jacqui Deans? My google searches have failed to find it. It is in reference to how to conceive a girl. Apparently this is related to the pH of the vagina, or something to do with x & y chromosomes. No doubt positively sexist and derogatory. I just want to know if it was remotely funny.
I did determine that Jacqui Deans, as an MP, did urgently demand that dihydrogen monoxide be banned. She understands it is so toxic even a teaspoon of it can kill you, its sale is completely unregulated, is freely available around NZ, and dozens of people die of it every year. She was also a Playschool presenter. It constantly amazes me how thick some of these MP's are, especially the ones in the true blue safe National seats like Waitaki.

He was talking to Jamie Lee Ross and one other about the fact that he had all Daughters and no Sons (or maybe the otherway around) and made some comment about an Old wives tale of how to ensure which you sex you get. He them made a remark to Deans whom was nearby "hey Jaqui, is it long and slow or short and hard for Boys" or something to that effect. Apparently the Media quote was close enough for Bridgess, but didn't want to actually repeat what he said. If that was indeed what was said, while I know we have to respect everyone in the workplace these days, I do think that comment was a tad week to have the kind if response that it has been. A Strong telling off and appology to Deans is what I would expect is the better response. I think Collins used thos entirely for her own gain.
