They have done it. I am speechless.
Adern wants to the global be 'first mover'. There are very clear reasons why no other country has done this.
They say NZ products will get a premium internationally because of this methane tax. They'll sure as hell need a premium to stay profitable. I think the premium will be having any viable farms left, and access to any protein products at all.
The unintended consequences are just so obvious, it hurts to think about it. Planting productive land in pine is already 4 times more profitable than drystock farming. Then you make drystock farming less profitable. This will accelerate the collapse of rural societies and economies. Everything will be planted in a mono-species (pine) with zero biodiversity. It will be an environmental disaster.
Not to mention the already high and increasing price of meat. I note chicken wont be covered by this tax, so KFC it will be for all. Either that or insects.
AND, the govt want to implement all of this in 2 years flat. Even their own documents say that will be problematic. If I didn't know better, I'd say Adern is pushing this through as a case study / experiment, to line her up for a nice job at the UN advising the rest of the world on climate change policies....
PS, municipal wastewater treatment plants put out a shit tonne of methane (excuse the pun). This tax is likely to have a material affect on Council / Watercare operating budgets. And you know who pays for that?
Government announces world-first scheme which will see farmers pay for emissions by 2025, concerns for tight timeframe
